The deli team visit Trethowan’s Dairy

We went to see how Caerphilly cheese is made

We have stocked Caerphilly made by Trethowan’s Dairy for a long while now and absolutely love its tangy freshness.  As it is made so near to us we thought it would be great to go and see how it is actually made. Tia, Mesalina, Jo and Eva set off one Spring morning to join the Trethowan’s Diary team and see behind the scenes at their beautiful dairy. They were given a lovely welcome and made to feel very at home.

Trethowan’s Gorwydd Caerphilly was originally made in Carmarthenshire before outgrowing its farm and moving to North Somerset.  You can read more about the Dairy here.

Caerphilly cheese just made

Mesalina and Eva got stuck in – most visitors just like to stand back and watch, but not this lot – they enjoyed actually rolling up their sleeves and helping to make the cheese!

Here they are with Tia, loading up the tins of freshly made cheese.

And here’s Jo carefully stirring the curds and whey mixture.

It was a brilliant day out and they learnt lots about cheese making.

A big thank you to the team at Trethowan’s dairy for letting us visit.

Artisan cheese for Spring

Pete and Jo in the deli are absolute cheese connoisseurs.  What they don’t know about cheese is not worth knowing.  The counter is beautifully arranged full of just mouthwatering artisan cheeses, many seasonal. Stock is kept in optimum conditions and looked after with great care. Call in and talk to us about cheese – and we’re always happy to let you taste! Here are three that are at their best in the Spring time.

artisan cheese Bristol deli

These three are in the counter at the moment and absolutely amazing.

They are all made by Alte Langhe in Italy’s Piedmonte region.  They are made with cow, goats’ and ewes’ mild and are just perfect to now.

La Tur’ Robiola – 4-6 weeks old. A soft, chalky centred cheese from Lombardy, Italy. Delicious with our Isolabella della Croce Sauvignon Blanc.

La Tur artisan cheese Aste Langhe

‘Nocciolo‘ – 2-4 weeks old. Perfectly gooey little cubes of creaminess. A heavenly match on a rosemary cracker.

Delicious artisan cheese in the deli counter

‘Val Belbo’ – 2-4 weeks old. Really, really fresh cheese. The perfect spring cheese, light but flavoursome with a nice lactic tang. Absolutely amazing with chestnut honey.

Superb cheese

Papa’s Prize – every Friday!

Your chance to win a prize

Winner, papa's prize on twitter

Everyone who works at the deli in Alma Road and at our cafe at the Royal West of England Academy on the Triangle in Bristol, always comment how lovely our customers are.  It’s true – we have lots of regulars, many who’ve supported us since the opening of our downstairs deli nearly 14 years ago and many newer customers who are always so cheerful and enthusiastic about Papadeli.

So we thought we’d do something small and fun to say thank you.  We’ve always loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and often dreamt of finding a golden ticket in our chocolate bar.  So we decided that we’d create our own version and came up with a Papadeli blue ticket that can be found in one customer’s bag at the deli every Friday.  Once found, the winning ticket can be exchanged for a prize in the deli.  It might be some artisan cheese, or a bottle of excellent wine, perhaps a box of handmade chocolates or a Papadeli voucher.

“The friendliest of the bunch” Wriggle on Papadeli!

Lovely review from Wriggle

A very friendly lady visited the deli a couple of weeks ago and raved about out millionaire’s shortbread.  She turned out to be foodie and writer, Olivia from Golden Pulse, who writes a column for Wriggle website. Her topic is “The Friendliest of the Bunch” and we were so pleased to hear that she’d enjoyed her visit so much that she was going to write about us.  Pete, our deli Manager and his colleagues, Tia, Hayley and Jo are extremely friendly and knowledgeable and it’s always great when customers comment on this.  We are always clearly even more delighted when they decide to put it in writing.

Wriggle came to write about Papadeli being friendly

She came back with a great photographer who took some excellent shots of the delicatessen and our takeaway food and then wrote up all about her experience.

We love what she’s written – but then we would, as she’d been very kind!

Take a look here to see what you think 🙂

Cheese of the week – Waterloo

Waterloo cheese shines this week

Waterloo cow's cheese in the deli counter

Every good delicatessen in our opinion need some good British Brie-type cheeses and Waterloo is no exception.  Made by the lovely people who make Wigmore which is always popular for it’s more-ish deliciousness.

Waterloo cheese is a mild, semi-soft cheese made near Riseley in Berkshire.  It is made from Guernsey milk.

Made using the washed curd method (where some of the whey is replaced with water in the preparation process), the butteriness comes through and the acidity is minimal.  Soft, creamy and gentle (which makes it really easy to eat!) it has a pale yellow colour, which develops as a result of the presence of natural carotene.  The flesh of the cheese is firm and rich and a tiny bit flaky at the centre, surrounded by an edge of more oozing texture towards the rind.

Waterloo cheese is on the deli counter for tasting – come and see what you like!

Some lovely cheese from the deli!

We are proud of our cheeses….

We spend a great deal of time tasting and selecting cheese for the deli counter and we make sure it’s always looked after, so when you take it home it will taste at its best.

We try to have some cheese on the counter available to taste as we know how, as a customer in the deli, faced with lots of different cheeses, it’s not easy to choose which one you’d like, especially if you haven’t tried them before.

The cheese of the moment at Papadeli is Rosemary Manchego.

Villarejo Rosemary Cheese, curado – a mature unpasteurised Spanish ewes´milk cheese from Cuenca, La Mancha . We are not meant to call it Manchego officially as it has a coating of rosemary and therefore differs from classical Manchego. The dairy is a small family business and the milk is collected from the dairy’s own herds and local farms.

This is a truly artisan Manchego-style cheese with a rosemary coated rind which gives it a very subtle hint of rosemary, which is a lovely change from the usual Manchego which we absolutely love for its nutty, buttery and clean flavour.

It won gold in the world cheese awards in 2007 and 2008 so we’re talking a cheese of pedigree.

Call into the deli to try some!

Christmas hampers

Christmas hampers make such a lovely gift

We conducted some research on Twitter and Facebook to see what people like to get in their Christmas hamper….

Christmas cheese for hampers

The responses we received on Twitter were  overwhelmingly savoury – with cheese, quince jam, pickles, mostarda fruits, charcoal crackers, wine, port and prosecco!

However, the Facebook followers were much more into sweeties – in addition to cheese, crackers, port, wine and pickles, they listed Turkish Delight, Salted caramels, Christmas pud, mince pies, dark chocolate, chocolate coffee beans, marmalade…. What an excellent Christmas hamper!

When we asked the Twitterati whether sweet things would be OK in a Christmas hamper and they responded that chocolates were acceptable and grappa soaked cherries definitely welcome!

We love this sort of survey at Papadeli (well anything that involves talking about food pleases us greatly!!) and delighted that many our followers feel the same!

Don’t forget we can arrange delivery for your Christmas hampers around the UK. Just order online here!
