Our cookery school teachers are all professional chefs and will show you all the tools and techniques that make food into a delicious meal. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and we welcome individuals and groups.  Our Cookery Classes are held in our top floor kitchen at Alma Road – it’s bright and sunny and the perfect venue to enjoy getting stuck into some seasonal ingredients and the finest foods from our delicatessen downstairs.

Great new foodie magazine, Crumbs, has interviewed wonderful Papadeli chef Stefani Smith.

Stefani, who came from Jamie Oliver’s restaurant in Watergate Bay, has been cooking up a wonder at our cafe, giving away her culinary secrets at our cookery school and adding her magic to our party catering.

Stefani’s food is inspired by all things seasonal and organic. She likes the ingredients to speak for themselves, and this is evident when you visit the Papadeli cafe.  Her dishes are imaginative and simply full of seasonality and flavour.

We firmly believe that Papadeli chef Stefani Smith is a rising star – so watch this space for the latest news!

Papa, aka Simon MacDonnell and his wife, Catrin, set up Papadeli 10 years ago in an ex office on Alma Road in Clifton, Bristol.  Little Tomos was 18 months old and spent a lot of his time sampling various foods from local producers and from further afield.

Since then so much has changed, but the food, we think, goes from strength to strength.  We opened a cafe upstairs, which took up half the first floor ( the rest was a flat roof!) and would run plates of gorgeous deli salads and homemade pies, tarts etc from the shop, upstairs.  All the washing up was done by hand – we used a lot of hand cream!!

As business built up, we too, built up – a kitchen on the flat roof.  This made life easier – no more running up and downstairs! We still washed everything up by hand, but were able to comfortably take on catering orders in our larger kitchen. Did I mention Sam came into the world in 2003 to add a little fun to the mix?

The delicatessen got busier, as did the cafe, and our dream of building up another floor soon became a reality.  3 years ago we saw the completion of a light and airy top floor (after much wrangling with the bank next door who stopped us building due to a right of light issue).  This space is now the main catering kitchen and houses our Cookery School.

Just over a year ago, we opened Papadeli cafe at the Royal Academy in Clifton.  This is a stunning art gallery and our cafe serves beautiful cakes and lunches.  Our customers can sit in the lovely cafe or on a sunny day out on the terrace or up on one of Bristol’s best balconies.  The gallery can be used as a venue for weddings, corporate events, parties – and we are proud to be able to offer a catering service at the RWA (Royal Academy of the West of England).


We are so lucky to still be here all those years later, thanks mainly to our wonderful, loyal customers who have supported us, many from the beginning, telling friends and spreading the word about Papadeli – we are immensely grateful to them.
